FAQS
What is Abdominoplasty?
An Abdominoplasty is a procedure designed to eliminate excess skin and fat, therefore achieving a tighter flatter abdomen.
How is it done?
It removes excess fat from the front of the stomach and the abdominal muscles are tightened, if they have stretched. As well as improving the profile, the procedure also helps to remove stretch marks and scars from the lower part of the abdomen.
How long does the operation take?
The procedure takes between two and three hours depending on the complexity.
Should I stop taking any medications?
Yes, you must not take any drugs containing aspirin for two weeks before and after surgery.
Will I be asleep?
This procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic.
How long will I have to stay in hospital?
Normally patients stay in hospital for one or two nights.
Will I have stitches?
Yes, the stitches will be dissolvable.
Where are the scars and how bad are they?
The standard Abdominoplasty incision is a long traverse scar running just above the pubic hair line, then out above the groin crease as far as the hips, they can also be adjusted to fit a particular underwear and usually around the navel.
What type of dressing will I have?
Sticky tape with elastoplast over the top. You will be advised to wear a properly fitted (corset) garment day and night this helps with the healing.
How long is it left on?
The tape is left on 7-10 days and the garment will be worn for a couple of weeks day and night.
Will I be swollen and bruised?
You will usually get some swelling above the incision line and some bruising.
Will I feel any discomfort?
There will be post operative discomfort, especially if the muscles have been tightened. Pain relieving medicine will be given to you after surgery to keep this to a minimum.
Can I bath or shower after the operation?
The taped dressing must be kept dry and remain in place until your stitches have dissolved, which is normally 7-10 days. You can normally return to bathing after the 10th day.
How long does it take to recover?
It takes between 2 to 3 weeks but sometimes healing may take longer than usual.
When is the final result seen?
At about 3 months, although the scar improves over a long period.
How long before I can go back to work?
The decision about when to return to work and resume normal activities depends on how fast you heal and how well you feel. You should mobilise gently within the limits of pain avoiding any physical demanding activities for the first 3 days. You should avoid lifting 3 to 4 weeks and exercise for 6 weeks, however, your surgeon will advise you on the appropriate schedule for you.
