What does a Breast Reduction accomplish?
A Breast Reduction, is a surgical procedure to improve shape and size of large and droopy breasts to a more normal proportion.
How is it done?
The nipples are moved upwards and the excess breast tissue and skin are removed. The skin is then brought together below the nipples. It is not usual for the breasts to be perfectly symmetrical. Sometimes nipple sensation can be reduced.
How long does the operation take?
The operation takes between 2 to 3 hours depending on its complexity.
Will I be asleep?
This procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic.
How long will I have to stay in hospital?
Normally patients stay in hospital for one or two nights.
Will I have stitches?
Yes, the stitches will be dissolvable but thin plastic stitches around the nipple, which may need to be removed between 7-10 days following surgery.
Where are the scars and how bad are they?
Around the nipple, then vertically from the nipple to the crease and then a variable length in the crease. Scars would be hidden by an ordinary bra.
What type of dressing will I have?
Sticky paper tape and a bulky padded bandage, then a supporting bra.
How long is it left on?
The bandage is removed after 4 days and a support bra is recommended which is worn for 6 weeks. The paper tape is removed after 2 weeks.
Will I be swollen and bruised?
Usually following your operation you have some swelling but this can vary. You can expect bruising, but occasionally this can be dramatic.
Will I feel any discomfort?
You may feel moderate discomfort after the operation. Pain relieving medication will be given to you after surgery to keep this to a minimum.
Can I bath or shower after the operation?
The paper tape dressing must be kept dry and remain in place until your stitches are removed. You can normally return to bathing after the 10th day.
How long does it take to recover?
It takes between 2 to 3 weeks but sometimes healing may take longer than usual.
When is the final results seen?
At about 6 months, although the scar improves over a long period.
How long before I can go back to work?
The decision about when to return to work and resume activities depends on how fast you heal and how well you feel. You should mobilise gently within the limits of pain avoiding any physical demanding activities for the first 3 days. As a general guide most clients return to work between 2 to 4 weeks.
